FULLY CERTIFIED LIMITED EDITION

The Leather Edition featured anthracite leather trim on the door-panels and Recaro seats plus, bizarrely, the leather symbol or ‘hidemark’ on its external badges! For £17,303, a premium of approx £1,500, it also offered unique 15” alloy wheels and pearlescent red coachwork. Advertised as a limited edition it is believed only around 250 were sold in the UK although it was only supplied to, and advertised by, dealers in the London area. Because it was announced shortly after Astra GTE mounted John Cleland’s overall victory in the 1989 BTCC it’s often colloquially called an ‘Astra Champion’ but the marketing made no mention of racing; the car was sold under the tagline ‘Hide & Sleek’.
