Originally registered as TUR 894M, the GXL modelled here had only covered 56,000 miles when, in late 1991, the engine bay and dashboard were completely burnt out when the then owner drove it with no air filter and the resulting carburettor blow-back ignited the front of the car. The damage did not deter the current owner Vince Judge, a train driver from Essex, who bought the wreck at a salvage auction for £20 plus £5.29 costs in April 1992 as he specifically wanted the more luxurious GXL with its distinctive quad-headlight front and rear opening quarter-lights.
